In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
