Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
